The In-Between

Even the most enjoyable things can become dull if indulged too frequently. It’s the time in between that makes special things special. It’s not just time itself, but also the moments we don’t enjoy that make the enjoyable ones even better.

We hate it when our shows are interrupted by commercials, but research indicates that those annoying interruptions actually make the viewing experience more enjoyable. Similarly, a bit of hardship, boredom, and loneliness are what make joy taste sweeter.

Dessert is richer when it’s rare. Water becomes the most amazing thing in the world when we’re parched. Time off feels more rewarding after a long, difficult stretch of work. Summer brings more delight after a long, cold winter. And time with someone you love is more thrilling after a time apart.

Life is best when we have balance. A balanced life can only be possible through discipline—we must control ourselves.
