Fitting in isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s good to a degree, but there’s a point at which it can be dangerous.
You shouldn’t be contrary just for the sake of being contrary though. You should be contrary when you know the status quo is wrong.
If you’re going to go against the grain, do it for the better, not merely to be difficult. Stubbornness is good when it’s for the right reason, but self-destructive when it’s for the wrong reason.
Supporting the status quo, and creating change, both require sacrifice. Both take time and effort, and both can affect your reputation in a negative way. Sometimes it’s right to be on the side of change and sometimes it’s right to support the status quo. Just don’t kid yourself about what it will cost you either way.
