It’s not about pretending to be something you’re not. It’s not about mimicking others. It’s about realizing who you truly are. The part of you that you’ve been ignoring or supressing. The noble you, who doesn’t get expressed very often, because of fear of rejection.
There’s a stigma that comes with expressing your better self. Most people don’t want you to be too deep, too philosophical, or too noble. You’re expected to be shallow, obedient to cultural norms, an entertainment junkie, and slightly debauched.
There will always be a niche group of people who get you, but most won’t. Most people will understand you only if you’re like them. But all they’re really seeing is themselves and those they have been mimicking reflected back at them.
