Knowing God Through Personal Experience

When you study God according to “scripture”, you’re studying someone else’s experience of God. This can still be useful, but ultimately we have to turn within. We have to let go of preconceived notions of God and be honest with ourselves about what we truly believe.

This is heresy to a religious person. And that’s why it’s difficult for a religious person to know God, as ironic as that sounds.

The Pharisees were a prime example. The Crusaders of the Middle Ages also were. And so are today’s fundamentalist Christians and Islamic extremists.

Contrast their behavior with Jesus. Wasn’t he the ultimate heretic?
